John E. Katarincic

GLADSTONE - John E. Katarincic, 84, of 1622 Montana Ave., Gladstone, passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2013, following a brief illness at the St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba.

John was born Sept. 5, 1928, in Escanaba, the son of John and Mary (Minnerick) Katarincic. He was raised in Escanaba and attended the St. Joseph Catholic School. John left home when he was only 16 and helped support his family by shoveling coal on the ore carrier Pam Snieder. He studied hard and became a 1st Engineer. He was forced to retire because of downsizing at the age of 52.

John was employed with Cleveland Cliffs on their ore boats in some capacity on the following Great Lakes Freighters, Grand Island, Michigan, Frontenac, Pontiac, Walter A. Sterling, and the Tom M. Girdler.

John was united in marriage to the former Gayle DuRoy on Jan. 19, 1952, in Cleveland, Ohio. On their wedding day they danced to the Frankie Zanchovic Band. John still loved to polka. John built his family home in Gladstone and also his cottage on Camp 7 with the help of his son, son-in-law and father-in-law. John was Croatian and was very proud of his heritage. He enjoyed Polvitia, Croatian sausage from Viau's, and his daughter's raisin oatmeal cookies.

John loved to watch the Packers, ice fish and he was so proud of the rare albino burbot fish that he caught on Feb. 12, 2007. He was featured in the Daily Press with his catch and he would show the pictures to anyone that would listen. John had it mounted and it hangs on his wall at home. He also enjoyed hunting, blueberry picking, riding snowmobiles and spending time at his cottage.

All Saints Church was very important to him and he had a special friendship with the "girls," Marilyn, Nancy and Sr. JoAnn. He held a special place in his heart for them.

John was a prostate cancer survivor for more than 10 years and loved to attend the Relay for Life.

He also would attend with his daughter and son-in-law every summer the Bellin Hospital Cancer Survivor Picnic in Green Bay.

Before John had heart valve replacement in May of 2012 and then his diagnosis of dementia, he had his daily route where he could be seen driving his green Chevy pickup to the various fishing sites to check up on the fishing that day. He would then go to his son and daughter-in-law to visit before heading home. Dementia is a horrible disease. It strips you of your mind, dignity and strength. John never forgot his family during this time. His family is thankful that God took him home before he forgot them. His family would like to thank his special friend at O.S.F., L.P.N Amber for always brightening his day.

Survivors include: son, John "Tim" (Ardy) Katarincic of Gladstone; daughter, Sue (Frank) Royer of Gladstone; brother, Robert (Annette) Katarincic of Florida; sister, Rosemary Katarincic of Escanaba; four grandchildren, Ben Royer of Gladstone, Jonna (Mitchell) DeGraves of Gladstone, Kali Katarincic of Gladstone and Kari Katarincic of Plymouth, Wis.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Gayle, on Jan. 8, 2005; brothers, Emil, Kenneth, Frank and James; sister, Maryjane; niece, Laurie and nephew Mark.

John's family will receive friends on Friday, July 12, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 3 p.m. at the All Saints Catholic Church in Gladstone with Rev. Fr. Jamie Ziminski officiating. Luncheon will follow in the All Saints Church Parish Hall. Burial will be at the Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Wells. The Skradski Family Funeral Homes of Escanaba and Gladstone are assisting the Katarincic family.
